If I have a choice, I choose to exercise outside any day over going to the gym. I love being out in the sunshine and just breathing fresh air as I burn some calories. I try to get creative with my workouts so I don’t get bored of doing the same thing day after day. Obviously, I have to go to the gym on occasion but for the days when I don’t want to just go outside and run or don’t have time to go to the gym, but still want to do some strength training, I have a few favorite exercises that can be done anywhere without any equipment and are really effective. Most mornings I have breakfast then workout and this workout is perfect for those busy mornings when time is short.
I always try to get a 5 minute warm up in before going into strength training and this usually includes jumping jacks, simple squats or a light jog. After I do that, I’m ready!
Running up and down stairs is one of my favorite exercises that gets my heart rate pumping and my legs burning. In Nashville, there are plenty of places to go to run the stairs so I usually don’t run out of options. If you don’t know of a place that has a large number of stairs, just try to think of public spaces like parks, municipal buildings or universities. Depending on the number of steps, I usually try to run up and down for about 8-10 minutes.
Did you know that our thigh muscles are the largest muscles in our bodies and therefore burn the most calories? Being that this is the case, using your legs in most workouts is essentials to gain strength and burn fat. Squats are one of the most effective ways to do this. Being sure to keep your weight in your heels and squat into a 90-degree angle will help you get the best out of your workout.
The hated yet loved exercise that will never go out of style. Using all your body weight, push ups give you the ultimate workout for your arms. If you can find a place to raise your legs at the same level or higher than the rest of your body, I find elevating my legs works best for me. Try to do ten reps at a time, three times around.
Cardio plus strength training in one is a win- win. These aren’t easy, by any stretch but your legs will certainly thank you for it. Working most of the muscles in your leg, jump squats are one of favorite ways to achieve toned legs.
In and Outs
These can be done, literally anywhere and are a really great way to engage your core. Using your entire body to push and pull your legs in and out wakes up your mid section and allows you to effectively tone.
Just like push ups, you are using all of your body weight to go up and down during a triceps dip, putting those triceps into overdrive. I try to do these a couple of times a week to remind my triceps not to go to sleep and to keep working.
Next time you go outside and workout try these exercises, you will be dripping sweat and burning calories in no time!
The outfit that I’m wearing is provided by Pheel, a lifestyle brand that brings women and men fashionable clothing that is transitional enough to go from the gym to lunch with friends. The creators behind the brand wanted those who live busy lives to be able to feel good about their workout gear. The clothes are comfortable, lightweight and flattering and I can honestly say, I’m a fan!
