Thirty has been great so far but it’s hard to believe I’m not twenty- three anymore. On the last night of my twenties, Wiley and I drove to the middle of no where Alabama and set out for a weekend getaway. We didn’t have any agenda and didn’t plan to make one. Our life has been turned upside down over the past few months so when he asked me what I wanted to do to celebrate my birthday, for the first time ever my answer was “relax and not think”. So that’s just what we did.
We booked this adorable little cottage in New Market Alabama, which is about 20 miles outside of Huntsville. The cottage is seated on a beautiful corner lot in the historic town of New Market. There’s not much to do there which is just what I hoped for. Across the street from the cottage is an old country restaurant that seemed to be the only place to dine in the small town. Locals came and went throughout the mornings and most of the people who visited reminded me of people from my home town. The men wore plaid shirts tucked into their Wrangler jeans and the sweet ladies hopped out of the pick up trucks in their cute floral sweaters. It felt like home.
The first night we drove to Huntsville and when in doubt, we always search for Whole Foods. Luckily, we found one so we ordered pizza, picked up some snacks and a few essentials for breakfast and went back to the cottage. We ate pizza out of the box while watching cable TV (we don’t have cable so it was a real treat), played card games and drank champagne, it was perfect.
The morning of my birthday, Wiley made pancakes with a side of fresh squeezed orange juice in the little corner kitchen. I talked on the phone with friends and family and we let the morning take it’s time. We eventually ventured back to Huntsville where we explored the little downtown area, found a fun mercantile and sipped on tea from the corner coffee shop. The rest of the day consisted of random explorations where we made memories and took it all in. Wiley surprised me with a massage (my first one ever) at a cute little spa and I now know why people say they are so great!
Day turned into night so we found our way back to the cottage for an evening spent with no distractions, just the two of us. I always remember how refreshing it is to get away for a few days and this little adventure was just right. Living days without any plans is something we don’t get to do very often but should make more time for. If I could turn 30 again, I would go right back to this spot!
