I know it’s hard to believe that summer hasn’t started yet (according to the calendar) because you’ve likely already had 90 degree days with the humidity level off the charts. Tomorrow is the first official day of this magical time of year and I’m thrilled. I have a secret that, instead of whispering, I feel like shouting to the mountain tops – I LOVE SUMMER – even the heat and humidity that come with it!
That’s no joke! Tomorrow, the first day of summer, is one of the best days of the year in my book. I would rather have sweat dripping down my back any day over bundling up avoiding the cold winter weather. I guess it runs in my blood. Being from the coastal plains of NC, I was raised doing things outside in the summer heat and it brings me so much joy every year when it comes back around. Now, I realize not everyone shares this same affection for the year’s hottest season so I’m going to share a few of my favorite ways to make the very best of what I call the best season!
I know this might sound silly and if I could see your eyes right now, I’d probably see you looking at me like I’m crazy because you’d rather relax in the air conditioning than brave the heat. But it’s the truth! My summers are the best because I love being outside. Being around any body of water will certainly make my heart sing but if water activities aren’t an option, there’re plenty more things to do. I love going on late afternoon/ evening hikes or long walks. This is a great time to detox from the work day and breathe in the warm summer air. Another thing that is super fun is having morning picnics. Pack a basket with your breakfast and head to a local park for some time outside before the sun gets too hot. I promise, you will be happier after spending just 30 minutes outside than you would after spending all day inside.
Host a party
Hosting friends for any occasion is a passion of mine, but if it isn’t your thing and you often find yourself saying “I don’t like cleaning up” or “it’s just too stressful”, know that there are ways around those things. Asking friends to bring their favorite dish eliminates the stress of having to prepare the whole fare. Wiley and I really enjoy getting ready for friends to come over by prepping together. He takes on the more labor-intensive tasks and I make the house fresh and cook. If you work together rather than having one person do everything, it makes it more fun. After all, aren’t summers made for socializing and getting together with those you love?!
Take a trip
This year, we decided that most of our summer would be spent in Nashville because we were gone so much last year, and have so much going on here! Most people plan at least one vacation per summer and I think this is an absolute must! We decided to take a three-day vacation with my sister-in-law and her husband for the 4th of July to a quiet lake in Georgia. Even though this might be our only vacation, I think taking a few days off and relaxing is super important. Take a few days to get out of town and breathe a little. We are all so overwhelmed with the everyday stresses of life that taking advantage of warm weather and time away can only be beneficial. Plus, we only live once and you never know what next year might bring!
Enjoy seasonal food
This is something that I try to do year ‘round but making a point to enjoy summers most alluring vegetables, fruits and herbs helps make memories that will last forever. When we eat, we are using several of our senses and that helps to create something in our memory that will never leave. So if you neighbor is growing squash in her garden, ask her if you can try some and maybe even make a dish with it to share. Food is the way to people’s hearts and if you are cooking with and eating what is growing at the moment, then you know it will be good.
Summer is a season that brings people together and makes us feel free. Life is a little more relaxed and things are the way they should be: happy. The next time you are thinking about skipping out on a summer activity because of a not-so-good excuse, think again, because I bet you will be thankful you chose to make those memories!
