Our Love Story

September 4, 2018

We all dream, and if we do it right, we dream big. When I was a little girl my biggest dream was to someday, find my Prince Charming, ride off into the sunset with him and never look back. Somehow, before I had even graduated from high school part of that dream came true.

Wiley and I have known each other since we were about three years old. We went to the same church together, sang in church plays together and did life around each other but obviously at that age, romance isn’t a priority. Our families always knew of each other, would say “hello” in the grocery store but we weren’t close friends. A few years later, Wiley’s family moved to a different church, we still knew about each other but we went to different schools so we never really hung out. Fast forward to high school. Wiley and his sister were redistricted into my high school and his sister, Callie and I played volleyball together. Callie and I became really good friends and one night there was a big party at a fellow student’s house that everyone went to. Wiley was there and at some point during the night I walked into a room at the party where we was sitting on the end of the bed with a crowd of people around him, singing songs about… well I don’t really remember all the details. I was mesmerized. I walked out of the room in awe of a guy who was playing the guitar and had the most magical voice I had ever heard.

In classic high school style, on Monday morning I wrote Callie a note, decorated it beautifully (because that’s what you do in 11th grade when there’s nothing else to do) and told her that I thought her brother “was SO cute”. At the bottom of the letter, in big letters I said “whatever you do, do not tell him I told you”. That afternoon Callie went home, her brother was in the kitchen having a snack (as he typically is) and she said “one of my friends likes you”, his response was one that started it all: “I hope it’s Melissa.” A week later, we were head over heals for each other and on December 2nd 2004, he asked me to be his girlfriend. My life has been full of so much love and joy since.

On September 4, 2010 we were married on a plantation right outside of Wilmington NC called Orton Plantation. It was a beautiful, hot southern day with only the sea breeze to cool us off but it was perfect. That day, I married the one God made for me and we rode off into the sunset and have not looked back. Big dreams come true.

Eight years later, I can say without a doubt, I love him more today than I did that day and my life has been made whole because we said “I do” in one of our favorite places with our favorite people around us. Love is not something that is to be taken lightly and to have the privilege to love and be loved by someone is the greatest of blessings. Today we celebrate the first eight years of our forever and I wouldn’t have changed a single second of it.
